Tightrope Walking: Balancing Your New Business and Your Family Life

More and more women are saying goodbye to the 9 to 5 and making their business dreams a reality. In fact, African-American women are starting businesses at a rate that’s even faster than the national average.* And behind so many of these brave women who have launched their dreams, are families who are demanding their time. Many sisters are not only launching a new business, but helping their extended families and raising their children.

So how does an entrepreneurial diva balance her new business venture and her family, and still remain fabulous (or at least sane)? That’s the question that I had as I talked with many of my amazing entrepreneurial girlfriends.

Here are their recommendations for moms balancing work and business:

• Get organized and stay organized. Many recommend setting a hard and fast schedule of when you’ll operate your business – especially if you’re working from your home. Make sure that you stick to your schedule of “clocking out” on time both mentally and physically as much as possible. This will leave time for family obligations.

• Try to involve your family in your business. There will be times when you can’t stick to your schedule. This is a great time to have your family step up with household responsibilities such as cooking dinner and setting the table. Explain to your children why you need their help. This is a great opportunity to teach your kids about what it takes to run a business. Who know, you may spark the entrepreneurial fire in them too!

• Keep your priorities in order. As a business owner and a mom, prioritizing is a must. The late Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, has a motto of “God first, family second and career third.” Etch your own personal priorities in stone, and your customers will adapt.

•Set a “no work day.” Every two weeks set a date when you’ll only spend time with your family. It will be hard to juggle at first, but with practice you’ll learn to manage your business schedule. Your family will treasure this quality time.
Make these tips a part of your business routine and you’ll be on your way to success with both your business and your family.
